The Wildfire: How Trump is Burning Down Our Democracy
Every story from this week is adding to the wildfire of chaos consuming American politics. The shutdown, deployment of National Guards, and Supreme Court rulings covered here are fueling a fire set to end our democracy. To stop the fire, we must make every action of Trump and solutions for them known, especially as talks of the midterms arise.
🔥The Encroaching Flames🔥
What Happened: The Supreme Court granted an emergency request allowing Trump to revoke the temporary legal status of up to 600,000 Venezuelan immigrants, paving the way for their deportation. This decision revokes a Biden-era policy that provided humanitarian relief to Venezuelans escaping their home country’s political instability. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson criticized the court for granting a total of 21 emergency appeals Trump has presented.
Why It Matters: This ruling is not an isolated incident—it is part of a large pattern of the conservative-led Supreme Court bending the knee to Trump no matter the cost. The judicial branch is in place to check presidential power, but this constitutional duty is being neglected for partisan politics. Now 600,000 Venezuelan immigrants—who sought refuge in the United States—are under threat of deportation. Turning these immigrants away after promising them safety would tarnish the image of the United States as a role model of peace. Trump is set on revoking Biden-era policy without a care for the people who will suffer, and it is up to the American people to raise the voices of immigrants to make sure they don’t go unnoticed.
What Happened: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) serves 7 million people by providing them necessary food, but the government shutdown could cause the WIC to close in two weeks. Mothers are now rationing their monthly benefits because of the WIC’s uncertain fate. Even after the shutdown is over, WIC will struggle as the House spending bill cuts its funds for fruit and vegetables.
Why It Matters: The refusal of Republicans to negotiate with Democrats about healthcare funding has real consequences for everyday Americans. Children will go without healthy food as mothers are forced to ration what little benefits they have left. It is important to recognize that even when the shutdown ends, WIC is still at risk. This story proves the lack of care Republicans have for the needs of their constituents, choosing to prioritize their millionaire friends over basic human rights. Democrats must stand strong in their push to get healthcare funding in the budget or already struggling families will be left without lifesaving support.
What Happened: Democrat-led states are suing Trump over his unauthorized attempts to deploy the National Guard in their cities. These lawsuits will address significant constitutional questions of separation of powers and federalism. Expanding the National Guard more than any president in history, it is unclear how Trump would respond to rulings that do not go in his favor.
Why It Matters: Trump is turning the presidency into a position of authoritarian rule, and the National Guard is a key tool in his efforts. We must support Democratic states who are standing up to Trump while not becoming too optimistic. With Trump’s pattern of disregarding the constitution, no one should expect with 100% certainty that he will obey lawsuits that don’t go his way. The safety of immigrant and minority populations, the right to free speech, and our democracy are all at risk with the army on the streets. If Trump continues deploying the National Guard without the permission of governors, he brings our country closer to a dictatorship than ever before.
📌Democrats Could Have a Slight Shot at Flipping a US House Seat in Utah Under a New Congressional Map
What Happened: The revised congressional map for Utah gives Democrats an improved chance to flip a House seat in the Republican-led state. Democrats need a net gain of three House seats in the midterms to take control from the Republicans, so this opportunity cannot be ignored. An extremely strong candidate and a national blue wave is necessary to win the seat, especially considering the new map was made by Republicans.
Why It Matters: With the midterms coming up next year, we must look to seats like the one in Utah as an escape from the authoritarian Trump administration. If Democrats reclaim the House, the party can stop Republican Senate bills from reaching the president’s desk. This power to halt harmful legislation is only possible with wins in current Republican seats. A national blue wave plays a key role in picking up seats, so we need Democrats across the country to share the message of candidates and the importance of voting. The Democratic party must also support candidates who speak the concerns of not just their party, but those of swing voters who also feel hopeless under the Trump administration.
What Happened: The Supreme Court heard a challenge to Colorado's ban on so-called “conversion therapy” for minors. Enacted in 2019, the ban prohibits mental health professionals from attempting to change the sexual orientation of minors. Critics of the ban argue it violates free speech, but they are ignoring the depression, anxiety, and heightened suicide risk seen in children who conversion therapy is forced upon.
Why It Matters: Conversion therapy is torture—it emotionally manipulates, physically harms, and traumatizes queer youth for simply being themselves. With the Supreme Court likely set to allow conversion therapy to stand, queer youth across the United States will be under threat. The mental health of children who already feel isolated will become worse, leading many to suicide. The attempt to justify conversion therapy with free speech neglects the lack of agency queer youth have in these tortuous programs. LGBTQ+ Americans deserve to feel protected, respected, and heard by their democracy, but the conservative Supreme Court is continuing to overlook their constitutional rights in favor of Trump.
What Happened: Democrat leaders are urging Republicans on the House Education and Workforce Committee to investigate if the Trump administration has violated the Hatch Act. According to the law, federal employees cannot engage in political activities during their official duties, yet the Trump administration used government messaging to blame Democrats for the shutdown. Department of Education employees have said their out-of-office replies were automatically replaced without their permission to similarly blame Democrats.
Why It Matters: Instead of fixing the government shutdown by setting funding for healthcare, the Republicans are falsely blaming Democrats for their inhumanity. The use of federal emails and websites to do so clearly violates the Hatch Act, but Republicans in charge of investigating such violations will likely do nothing. This entire situation highlights the blind loyalty Republicans have for Trump and his divisive wishes. Without accountability checks, Trump will feel enlightened to keep violating federal law, risk the lives of Americans, and extend presidential power well beyond its limits. We must make stories like this known for the midterms—it’s our last chance at saving our democracy.
