The Tilt Towards Power

The United States is sat on a tilted scale. One side holds democracy and the other carries Trump and his growing taste for control. Each authoritarian move made by Trump shifts the weight in the wrong direction. The scale keeps dropping fast, forcing democracy to fight for its very survival. Keep reading this newsletter to uncover every shift from the past week and how our country can hang on.

 ⚖️The Balancing Act of Democracy⚖️

What Happened: Trump is pledging to end temporary legal protections for Minnesota Somalis, an action he has no constitutional authority to do. These protections prevent immigrants from being deported, and Trump is making this pledge without evidence or sufficient justification. Advocates warn Trump’s focus on Somalis could increase Islamophobia at a time when it is already on the rise.

Why It Matters: Trump’s policies are not guided by reason, but instead, rely on hatred and fear to assert control. The Somali immigrant population in Minnesota and in the entire United States are valuable members of their community who work, pay taxes, and support their neighbors. Taking away their legal protections will only harm the country, causing Islamophobia to rise while ripping families apart. And for U.S. citizens from Somalia, Trump is telling his base it is ok to question their status and label them as dangerous. This newest pledge demonstrates that Trump believes it is ok to act outside of the constitution if it means his wishes are met. If Republicans do not stand up to this overreach, then Trump is given the greenlight to target even more immigrant groups.

What Happened: Before the next meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy is reaffirming his attacks on aluminum vaccine components. Without evidence, Kennedy openly argues these vaccines cause autism, asthma, and food allergies. Kennedy is intentionally creating uncertainty about vaccine safety and the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, something needed to ensure a stable market for shots.

Why It Matters: The HHS Secretary is supposed to be the voice for scientific fact and an advocate for life-saving care, but Kennedy is doing the exact opposite of that. Instead of pushing for vaccines, Kennedy is fueling an anti-vax movement that has already caused diseases including polio and measles to rise. Children and those with auto-immune deficiencies are most vulnerable to this rise, making community spaces like school, work, or the playground dangerous. Generations of research and experimentation are being pushed aside by Kennedy in favor of conspiracy theories—a choice that will shape the opinions of Americans for years to come. These consequences are intentional and are part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to question science and defund initiatives supporting the health of all Americans.

What Happened: The Department of Defense has opened an investigation into Senator Mark Kelly for his participation in a video urging the military and intelligence community not to obey illegal orders from the Trump administration. Kelly claims this investigation is an intimation tactic meant to scare people away from holding Trump accountable. Last week on Truth Social, Trump said the Democrats in the video should be arrested for their “seditious behavior” that could be “punishable by death.”

Why It Matters: What the Democrats argued for in the video is not illegal and should be seen as a sign that the Trump administration is going too far. Free speech and accountability are cornerstones of a functioning democracy, so Trump threatening to rip these rights away shows the kind of president—or dictator—he wants to be. Mark Kelly is right, this investigation is meant to quell any attempts to stop Trump, but it should not be taken lightly. By showing a willingness to attack political opponents, the Department of Defense is setting itself up to be a silencer, not defender, of the American people. Trump’s Truth Social post demonstrates how far he wants to take this battle. Whether it was said seriously or as a joke, Trump’s post is fanning the flame of political violence that has been rising in recent months. This entire story points to the dangerous future awaiting our democracy under Trump—one full of fear that begs for resistance.

What Happened: Speaker Mike Johnson said that House Republicans have little interest in extending ACA subsidies despite their promise to vote on the issue once the shutdown ended. Subsidies expire at the end of this year, affecting tens of millions who benefit from them. Any healthcare plan to address this concern will require substantial Republican support.

Why It Matters: This fight is about whether healthcare stays within reach for the people who need it most. When lawmakers shrug off a promise to protect the ACA, they are signaling that affordability and humanity are not priorities. Without these subsidies, premiums will spike overnight and millions will get shoved back into a system where coverage becomes a luxury instead of a basic safeguard. It should have been clear to the eight Democrats who ended the shut down that Republicans had no interest in meeting their demands. They should have never trusted a party set on defunding needed government programs with the lives of millions of Americans at stake. Moving forward, voters must support politicians who care about their survival—not sacrificing care for tax cuts or image.

What Happened: Bruna Ferreira, mother of press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, has been detained by ICE. Brought to the United States as a child in 1998, Ferreira maintained her legal status under DACA. The reason for her detention is overstaying a tourist visa that expired in June 1999.

Why It Matters: This case proves that no one is safe from Trump’s deportation efforts—not even a family member of someone in his administration. Ferreira entered the United States without a choice, but she did everything she could under DACA to give herself the legal protections to build a life here. But now, she has been ripped away from her family and must go to a country she doesn’t truly know. No matter the response or excuses Leavitt provides, the message has been sent to the country that no bonds of humanity, family, or basic dignity can stop ICE. The only criminal charge Ferreira has ever faced is an arrest on a suspicion of battery, but this unclear charge does not match the violent archetype Trump is seemingly kicking out of the country. Immigrants are a key factor of what makes America actually great, and we should respect them as humans, not political pawns.

What Happened: The case surrounding Trump and his allies supposed interference in the 2020 election in Georgia has been dropped. Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow is framing the case as “political persecution” that “should have never been brought.” On Truth Social, Trump claims the case was an attempt to “destroy our legal system.”

Why It Matters: Trump should be tried and held accountable for any potential election interference, no matter if he is the sitting president or not. This case being dismissed is a blow to accountability and the image of the United States as a democracy. But the true narrative behind this story and its lasting legacy are the words of Sadow and Trump himself. By telling the entire nation the case was politically motivated, Trump is setting the stage for labeling any accusations against him as void. This shift primes his base to reject any future charges even when the evidence is overbearing, pushing the country closer to a world where truth loses power and loyalty replaces the law.
