The Scary Reality of American Politics

With September now upon us, we have officially entered the Halloween season. Soon, movies with jump scares, monsters, and ghosts will be taking over the media scene, but the horror is not limited to the silver screen. The reality Americans are facing every day is slowly becoming its own scary movie. Looking at the DC takeover, immigration raids, and fear propagated by the Trump administration, it’s easy to draw parallels between the horrors on screen and those in the White House. This newsletter breaks down this week’s new scenes and scares, making sure all of our screams are heard

 😱A Week of Frights😱

What Happened: Following the assasination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Trump said he wants the nation to heal, but he is only causing further division. Trump is blaming the “radical” and “lunatic” left for the incident, claiming Democrats stand in the way of peace. The actual motivations of the shooter are unclear.

Why It Matters: Instead of calming down a shaken country, Trump is exploiting the tragedy to inflame partisan anger. By blaming Democrats without evidence, he fuels suspicion and resentment at a moment when political violence must be condemned, not incited. That choice deepens divisions rather than builds unity, leaving no space for genuine healing. What happens next is critical—political leaders must resist turning this violence into another wedge between parties and focus on truth, accountability, and protecting civic life from being consumed by fear. The outrage over Charlie Kirk’s death should become momentum for addressing America’s deeper crisis: gun violence. Republicans cannot continue deflecting blame while refusing to confront the weapons that make these tragedies inevitable.

What Happened: Trump is threatening to declare another national emergency in DC if local police do not cooperate with ICE. Falsely stating there is “no crime” in DC, Trump has argued on Truth Social that if immigration enforcement cannot work properly, crime will come roaring back. These Truth Social comments come after Trump has threatened other Democratic-led cities with National Guard deployment, namely Chicago and Baltimore, under the guise of rampant crime.

Why It Matters: Calling for another emergency in DC has everything to do with control. Trump claims the city is safe while simultaneously insisting ICE must be unleashed, a contradiction that exposes the political theater at play. Each threat chips away at the idea that local governments set their own priorities, replacing it with a model where federal power dictates policy on demand. If this tactic spreads, any city that resists Trump’s immigration agenda could find itself under the shadow of troops or federal agents. The danger isn’t just for immigrants—it’s for democracy itself.

What Happened: Trump has ordered a military strike on a Venezuelan boat supposedly carrying cocaine and fentanyl, killing three men on board. The U.S. government has always relied on the Coast Guard and law enforcement personnel to inspect a vessel before it is attacked, but Trump greenlit his lethal military force without any prior confirmation. Trump conducted a similar strike on September 2nd which killed eleven people on a boat Trump claimed, without evidence, was heading towards the United States with drugs.

Why It Matters: Authorizing lethal force without proof marks a dangerous shift in United States policy. Past administrations have relied on second opinions from military and security experts to confirm a danger before taking action, but Trump bypassed those safeguards entirely. Strikes like these blur the line between enforcement and acts of war, setting a precedent where suspicions alone can justify killing. Military power is now becoming a substitute for evidence, diplomacy, and even due process. The deaths raise more than human rights concerns—they risk destabilizing relations across the region and entrenching a reckless pattern of unilateral violence.

What Happened: Trump has filed a $15 billion lawsuit against the New York Times for their alleged defamation of his character. Claiming the newspaper has become a mouthpiece for the radical left, Trump is angry at the tax fraud accusations its journalists have made. A similar $10 billion lawsuit was filed by Trump against The Wall Street Journal for exposing his ties to Jeffery Epstein.

Why It Matters: Trump’s billion dollar lawsuits are not about damages—they are about intimidation. The size of the claims alone send a chilling message to reporters who uncover uncomfortable truths. These attacks reveal a pattern: punish those who investigate rather than confront the evidence they publish. Such lawsuits drain resources, slow reporting, and attempt to turn the press into a tool of fear instead of accountability. When leaders use courts to crush scrutiny, the public loses access to facts needed for a functioning democracy.

What Happened: If he had been asked by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Trump claims he would have lowered flags for assassinated Democrat Melissa Hortman like he did for Charlie Kirk. After Hortman was killed in June, Trump said it would have been a waste of time to entertain a call with Walz who he said was “a mess.” Trump is continuing to argue political violence only comes from the left, ignoring Hortman, the attack on Nancy Pelosi’s husband, and the arson attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s home.

Why It Matters: The president should stand as the voice of reason and compassion in tumultuous times like these, but Trump couldn’t be further from that responsibility. Instead of calling Walz and honoring Hortman, Trump decided to tarnish the character of the governor mourning his colleague and friend. The same basic courtesy applied to Charlie Kirk, a conservative who built his base off of bigotry and hate, was not applied to an actual political leader. This is far from a misstep as it represents a large problem for America under Trump. Political parties are now more polarized than ever, and the villainization of Democrats led by Trump on the national stage is only making this dangerously worse.

What Happened: California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff is reintroducing his landmark legislation titled “Protecting Our Democracy Act” that aims to stop the abuses of the Trump administration. Updates to his original 2021 version consist of limits on pardon power, new provisions regarding the dismissal of criminal prosecutions, strengthening congressional subpoenas, and asserting the power of the purse. Schiff states his bill, in theory, should have nonpartisan support since it limits all executive power, including future Democratic presidents.

Why It Matters: The future of the Democratic party and our entire country rests on supporting legislation like this. Democrats should not be afraid to challenge Trump with bold regulations that embody the purpose of checks and balances, even if they are facing investigations like Schiff is. The American people elected their representatives to be their voice, and Democrats cannot cower at this constitutional responsibility. This bill will likely not get the bipartisan support it needs to pass now—but its message extends far beyond that. With the midterms next year, voters must be shown that they are politicians willing to fight for them. Legislation like this making the news will help gather votes from Americans both angry and scared for our democracy.
