Democracy on the Verge of Flunking
It’s back-to-school time! As students enter the classroom for another year of learning, Republicans continue to forget the most basic lessons taught in school. Whether they are testing the bounds of presidential power or breaking the very values that uphold our democracy, Republicans are acting in a way any civics class would label unconstitutional. This newsletter covers all the flunks of the week, explaining how every failed test impacts Americans and the immigrants who truly make our country great.
📝Constitutional Quiz: The Test Republicans Keep Failing📝
What Happened: “A good moral character” is a long-standing requirement for awarding U.S. citizenship that examines an applicant's criminal history. The Trump administration wants to expand this requirement to include an applicant’s adherence to social norms, behavior, and positive contributions to the nation. While launching immigration raids and fast-tracking deportations, the Trump administration has now begun restricting legal immigration methods.
Why It Matters: The phrase “good moral character” sounds straightforward, but in Trump’s hands it becomes a weapon of subjectivity. Expanding the definition beyond criminal history to cover behavior, cultural practices, or perceived contributions turns citizenship into a character contest judged through a partisan lens. It’s less about law and more about forcing assimilation—punishing immigrants who hold onto their traditions instead of conforming to a narrow vision of what being “American” looks like. Republicans often argue that immigrants should “just come legally,” yet this move exposes the hypocrisy since even the legal path is now being rigged against those who don’t fit the mold. If this framework continues, citizenship itself will stop being a right earned through clear rules and instead become a prize reserved for those who mirror the ruling party’s values. The danger is a future where belonging in America isn’t determined by law or fairness but by loyalty and compliance.
What Happened: The Republican governors of West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio have announced they will send hundreds of National Guard troops to Washington DC, escalating Trump’s federal takeover of the city. Trump justified his actions by falsely claiming crime has risen in Washington DC, and these three governors are supporting his lies. Critics argue Trump’s takeover is simply an intimidation tactic that will harm existing efforts to both aid the homeless and decrease crime.
Why It Matters: When governors deploy their National Guard units to Washington DC on Trump’s command, it isn’t about crime—it’s about blind loyalty. They’ve traded accountability for obedience, propping up lies at the expense of their own citizens’ trust. The people who will feel this shift first aren’t violent criminals but the homeless, the vulnerable, the ones already struggling to survive. Flooding the streets with troops doesn’t solve poverty or reduce crime, it just signals that brute force is the new answer to complex problems. What we’re seeing is a president testing how far he can stretch executive power while his allies cheer him on. When the military presence becomes a tool to silence, intimidate, and reshape public life, the line between democracy and dictatorship starts to vanish.
What Happened: Attorney General Pam Bondi has approved investigations into key Democrat officials, and Republican lawyer Mike Davis is using this momentum to push for criminal investigations of Hillary Clinton, Obama, Biden, and senior Justice Department personnel. Though no evidence has been presented, Davis argues these leaders have illegally plotted against Trump in recent election cycles. Democrats say the investigations are meant to distract from Trump’s recent abuses of power and failure to release the Epstein files.
Why It Matters: Authoritarian regimes thrive on turning prosecutors into political hitmen, and that’s exactly what we’re watching unfold as Trump’s allies chase phantom crimes from his rivals. No evidence has surfaced, yet the mere act of launching investigations plants suspicion in the public’s mind and normalizes the idea that political opponents belong in courtrooms, not elections. It’s the same playbook Orwell warned of—erase the line between dissent and criminality until opposition itself is a crime. This dangerous momentum won’t stop with Democrats as once the precedent is set, anyone who refuses to bend the knee could be next. The time to resist this slide is now before political stunts harden into permanent tools of control.
What Happened: After Putin claimed mail-in ballots were used to rig the 2020 presidential election, Trump stated he will lead a movement to end the voting practice. Both leaders falsely stated that no other country has mail-in ballots, but various other democratic countries do with no fairness issues. Though federal law and the Constitution limit the ability of Trump to institute a nationwide ban, the president vowed to sign an executive order doing just that.
Why It Matters: Trump’s promise to end mail-in voting isn’t about election security—it’s about suppressing voices that stand in his way. Veterans serving overseas, disabled voters, and Americans living abroad have relied on mail-in ballots for generations, and ripping away that right would silence the very people who sacrifice the most for democracy. The legal obstacles are obvious but the danger lies in the attempt itself. Aligning with Putin, a dictator whose own elections are a sham, only underscores the real goal: to undermine trust in free and fair elections while concentrating power in fewer hands. If Trump can cast doubt on legitimate votes now, he sets the stage to decide whose votes count in the future.
What Happened: Texas Democrats who fled the state in protest of Republican redistricting plans have returned, and these representatives were ordered to have a law enforcement escort if they wanted to leave the state house. Three Democrats refused the escort and slept in the state house overnight, citing that they are tired of being pushed around for resisting. One of the Democrats, Representative Nicole Collier, says she will spend her time focusing on issues voters actually care about like tax reform and eliminating the STAAR test.
Why It Matters: Ordering law enforcement to escort elected officials like criminals is nothing short of authoritarian, a move meant to punish dissent instead of allowing legitimate debate. When Democrats refuse to back down, they’re engaging in the kind of “good trouble” that history proves is necessary to defend democracy. Gerrymandering is not just a partisan tool—it’s an assault on the integrity of elections and a way of silencing entire communities whose voices deserve to be heard. The resistance from these lawmakers is bigger than one fight in Texas as it’s a stand against a system designed to let politicians choose their voters instead of the other way around. Supporting their defiance means defending fair representation for every voter in every state.
What Happened: The Trump administration is revoking the security clearances of 37 current and former government officials, ranging from senior positions to low-profile roles. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard claims these officials have engaged in the "politicization or weaponization of intelligence” to advance personal goals, but she provided no evidence to back up her accusations. Since the officials worked on investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and other projects that angered Trump, this move is another example of Trump’s unconstitutional targeting of political adversaries.
Why It Matters: While the Trump administration declares itself to be against the politicization of national intelligence, the actions of its top employees say otherwise. The targeting of officials who previously investigated Trump is not simply revenge—its an authoritarian measure aimed at punishing all dissent. Without the ability to hold the president accountable, Trump is given free rein to enact executive orders and conduct foreign relations that threaten the integrity of our nation. The officials who lost their clearance are beginning to speak out, and their warnings shouldn’t be ignored. This move is not an isolated incident—it fits a larger pattern of Trump stretching presidential authority to its limits. If Trump’s power trip isn’t stopped now, it will only become easier for him to get away with turning the presidency into a dictatorship.
