Adjusting to Injustice
We just celebrated the 4th of July, a day meant to honor freedom, joy, and the promise of a better future. But for millions of people across the country, that promise feels more out of reach than ever. Rights are being stripped, costs are skyrocketing, and fear is replacing hope in communities that were once proud to call this country home. The flags and fireworks may have faded, but the fight for what America should be is far from over. If you want to understand how quickly freedom can vanish—and what’s behind it—keep reading.
🎆After the Fireworks: What’s Left of the American Dream?🎆
📌Rural Hospitals Brace for Financial Hits or Even Closure Under Republicans’ $1 Trillion Medicaid Cut
What Happened: Trump’s budget will cut $1 trillion in funding for Medicaid over the next 10 years, and rural areas, where over 20% of Americans live, will be disproportionately affected. More than 300 hospitals are at risk of closure because of the budget. If these closures occur, rural Americans would be forced to travel over an hour for emergency care. Once patients reach a hospital, those who are low-income and/or disabled who rely on Medicaid for expenses will be further isolated financially from medical help.
Why It Matters: This budget is a clear declaration of whose lives are considered worth protecting and whose aren’t. Slashing Medicaid to bankroll tax cuts for the wealthy sends a brutal message to the sick, the poor, and the rural: you're on your own. Hospitals will close, care will vanish, and those already living on the edge will be pushed past it. This isn’t about tough choices—it’s about deliberate cruelty disguised as economic policy. Republicans knew the consequences and still gave it their vote, sacrificing human lives to keep Trump happy. Some of those lives will be lost in backseats, on kitchen floors, or in empty hospital parking lots—too far from care that used to exist. What’s left is a system where survival depends not on need, but on privilege.
What Happened: New homes are expected to get more expensive because of Trump’s tariff agenda that raises the cost of construction materials. An NBC News analysis found the total cost of building a single-family home will increase by over $4,000. Additionally, an April survey from the National Association of Home Buyers estimated this number could be as high as $10,900 per home. Home buyers who are already facing a housing shortage will be footing the surge in prices. Trump is continuing to pursue an aggressive tariff policy, especially on Mexico and Canada who are America’s main construction suppliers, that will only cause further disruptions to the housing market.
Why It Matters: Trump’s tariffs are driving the country deeper into a crisis of affordability. At a time when families are already struggling to buy homes, his trade war is adding thousands to the price tag with no plan to fix the shortage. This kind of policy doesn’t strengthen the economy—it weakens it from the ground up. From housing to groceries to basic goods, rising costs are becoming the norm, not the exception. Every part of daily life is being strained by decisions made without regard for long-term consequences. Instead of building stability, Trump is fueling volatility, leaving everyday Americans trapped in the fallout. The longer this continues, the more unlivable the American dream becomes.
What Happened: In the past two weeks, California Democrats have rolled back progressive climate policy in an apparent attempt to win back working-class voters. Environmental reviews for construction projects, caps on oil profits, and clean fuel mandates are key examples of these now reduced policies. California Democrats justified their actions by claiming climate policy drives up the state's cost of living, echoing common Republican arguments.
Why It Matters: Democrats in California are caving to political pressure, and the consequences could ripple far beyond the state. By rolling back key climate policies to appease swing voters, they’re placing decades of hard-won environmental progress on the chopping block. These decisions send a dangerous message—that protecting the planet is optional when elections get tough. Climate action has never been easy, but retreating now undermines both the science and the urgency of the crisis. Voters need leaders who can tackle affordability without gutting sustainability. If Democrats won’t stand strong on climate, the cost won’t just be political—it’ll be irreversible.
What Happened: Matching those against Maine and Minnesota, the Trump administration has filed a lawsuit challenging California’s policy that allows transgender students to play on the team of their choice. Trump first threatened to withhold federal funding from California over one trans woman participating in track and field competition, but now his administration has moved the disagreement into the courtroom. This situation fits in with other threats made by Trump, namely withholding funding from New York if ICE operations are halted and from universities who support free speech.
Why It Matters: This lawsuit is more than a fight over sports—it’s part of a growing authoritarian push to control how states govern themselves. The administration is using federal power to punish California for allowing transgender students to participate in sports, while sending a warning to any state that dares to protect marginalized communities. Instead of respecting state authority, Trump is turning funding into a weapon, pushing discriminatory policies from the top down. Legal threats like this don’t just undermine state rights—they erode the foundation of local democracy and federalism. If this continues, states will lose the ability to serve their people without fear of federal retaliation. The future of American democracy hinges not only on who holds power, but on whether that power respects the boundaries that keep it from becoming absolute.
What Happened: The Department of Education announced that 8 million student loan borrowers whose payments have been on pause for over a year will start to see interest accrue on their loans again. Though the Trump Administration claims this change falls in line with a court order striking down SAVE, the ruling never states interest-free borrowing is illegal. Adding more financial stress, Trump’s budget requires all SAVE borrowers to switch to a new repayment plan by July 2028. These efforts have reversed progress made by the Biden administration to forgive student debt and loosen loan requirements post-pandemic.
Why It Matters: Restarting interest on student loans doesn’t just increase debt—it reshapes who has access to higher education and who gets left behind. At a time when prices are already rising from Trump’s tariff policies, millions of borrowers will now face growing balances with no meaningful relief in sight. This shift puts financial stability further out of reach for those trying to build a future, especially young people already burdened by inflation and job insecurity. For many, student loans will become a lifelong weight instead of a temporary investment. Requiring borrowers to switch repayment plans by 2028 adds another layer of confusion and instability, making it harder to plan ahead. The administration’s rollback of Biden-era protections signals a deeper shift: treating education not as a public good, but as a privilege reserved for those who can afford the cost of admission.
What Happened: Because of American-led investments into international AIDS programs, the number of people killed by the disease is at the lowest level seen in the past three decades. An executive signed in January by Trump that suspended all foreign aid has stopped this progress, reversing a $4 billion pledge for global HIV response the U.S. previously made. Without funding from the U.S. and donors who follow the nation’s lead, a new United Nations report warns that approximately 4 million people will suffer AIDS-related deaths by 2029.
Why It Matters: Trump’s decision to freeze foreign aid has triggered a global health setback with deadly consequences. The decision to cut billions in HIV funding has stalled decades of progress and signaled to other countries that global health commitments can be abandoned without consequence. Millions of lives are now at risk as treatment programs collapse and prevention efforts are forced to scale back. This shift doesn’t just threaten public health—it damages America’s credibility and leadership on the world stage. Walking away from one of the most successful health campaigns in history starts a dangerous trend where politics outweigh human survival. If this path continues, the world will face the cost of preventable deaths and shattered trust.
