A Cold December for Democracy
As the weather cools and the snow begins to fall, the climate is not the only thing bracing for a dull future. The actions taken this week by the Trump administration are pushing the United States into a cold political season. Democracy is being pushed aside to freeze, but Democrats have a chance in 2026 to save us all if we play our cards right.
🎁All I Want for Christmas is Accountability🎁
What Happened: The Trump administration has halted immigration applications submitted by nationals from 19 countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. National security concerns were cited as the reason for the pause, arguing more time is needed to effectively vet the immigrants. More than 1.4 million people with pending asylum applications will be impacted.
Why It Matters: Last week, two National Guard members were shot by an Afghan national who legally entered the United States, and the Trump administration is using this tragedy to enact its inhumane policy. Characterizing entire nations of people as dangerous creates stereotypes that only fuel further violence and hatred. The Trump administration has made its issues with illegal immigration clear, but by targeting legal pathways towards asylum, they are signaling the fight was never about legality. The true purpose behind this travel ban is developing a narrative that villainizes immigrants and diversity itself—handing Trump control over the very fabric of our nation. Repercussions of this policy style will ripple for generations and shift the image of the United States from a picture of peace towards a country of unwelcoming hate.
What Happened: Republican Matt Van Epps defeated Democrat Aftyn Behn by only 9 percentage points in a Tennessee district Trump carried by 22 points in 2024. This district is reliably red with the past Republican State Representative Mark Green winning his 2024 re-election by 21 points. Since the 2024 election, Democrats have outperformed Kamala Harris’ showing in the presidential election by an average of 16 points in 5 special elections.
Why It Matters: Though the Democratic candidate lost, the recent special election should send alarm bells throughout the entire Republican Party. It is clear that voters are not satisfied with Trump’s refusal to deliver on his promise of affordability, and Democrats must jump on this trend. No election in the 2026 midterms should be seen as unworthy of attention or support by the Democratic Party. Voters around the country are ready to make their voices heard, so Democrats must speak to their concerns and treat every election like a close race. We have the opportunity to take back the House and stop Trump’s unconstitutional policies from passing Congress—it is crucial we do not waste it. If Democrats do not make gains in the midterms, the life of our democracy will be threatened even more than it is now.
What Happened: Trump has pardoned Democratic Representative Henry Cuellar for over a dozen federal charges related to bribery allegations. Alleging the real reason Cuellar was indicted was for his opposition to Biden’s immigration policies, Trump said the pardon frees Cuellar from political prosecution.
Why It Matters: Trump is abusing his power to pardon federal crimes by using it to diminish accountability. Chalking up every charge faced by his supporters to political prosecution, Trump is setting the stage for Republicans to get away with anything. No matter if it is a Democrat or Republican, every leader should face consequences for their actions. If no repercussions are faced, then it sends a message that rule of law is null and void. Voters should be able to trust that their leaders will act with integrity and exercise their constitutional duties properly. With our own president sideling this democratic value, the future of our country is put in immense danger.
What Happened: In March, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used the Signal commercial messaging app to share information about a military strike in Yemen, accidentally adding a reporter who saw the classified plan. A recent Pentagon investigation of this incident found Hegseth could have endangered U.S. troops if the information fell into enemy hands.
Why It Matters: This is the kind of mistake that gets people killed, yet Trump is treating it like a minor slip up by refusing to hold Hegseth accountable. The real warning in the report isn’t just about one incident—it’s about a culture of carelessness inside Trump’s cabinet. When the Defense Secretary places troops in danger and is set to face no consequences, it sends a message that the rules don’t apply if you're blindly loyal. The Pentagon report is a clear indication about what happens when national security becomes secondary to politics. If this trend holds, the next mistake won’t end with a report—it’ll end with lives lost. These are the kinds of stories Democrats must platform since they teach the reality of Trump’s America.
What Happened: Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the federal government will start withholding money for SNAP food aid programs from states that refuse to provide the immigration status of participants. SNAP currently helps 42 million Americans buy groceries, but the program may be cut by states who can no longer afford it. This is a partisan policy aimed to make Democratic-led states suffer since they are the only ones not providing the needed information.
Why It Matters: This move weaponizes hunger to score political points. SNAP keeps millions alive, so this policy is forcing states to choose between violating privacy or gutting essential aid. The threat hits families first, not politicians. Both American citizens and immigrants alike will starve without access to the groceries they rely on just to get through the week. When a government is willing to starve its own people to make a point, it shows just how far it has drifted from serving the public at all. Trump claims to be about affordability but cutting SNAP shows exactly the opposite.
What Happened: The Trump administration has fired 8 immigration judges based in New York City, becoming part of the 98 judges that have been fired since January. The Justice Department stated this move was done in response to the “thousands of aliens” Biden granted amnesty to. Immigration courts already have a backlog of over 3.4 million cases nationally, and without these judges, America’s most populated city will continue to struggle.
Why It Matters: Firing immigration judges in a city already drowning in cases isn’t reform—it’s sabotage. Removing experienced judges guarantees slower processing times, longer waits for families, and more chaos for a strained system. Trump claims to support legal immigration, yet he keeps dismantling the very mechanisms required to make it possible. Cutting judges erases the pathways people are supposed to use, leaving them vulnerable to deportation. It’s a strategy designed to manufacture dysfunction and then blame migrants for the crisis he helped create. And by hollowing out the courts, Trump is turning due process into a privilege instead of a promise.
